Preparing for Hurricane Sandy was easy. Living in Tidewater, all of us have been through this before, we certainly know the drill. But this time, many co-workers, including my boss were leaving for a meeting in St. Louis right before Sandy was scheduled to hit. Keep calm and carry on, I guess? And it shouldn't matter; selling office supplies is selling office supplies, no matter the weather.

Our local news always does a great job of scaring us into fleeing to the stores to prepare. Flashing stories, pictures and videos of the past devastating hurricanes, Fran, Floyd, Isabel and Irene are shown for days before the actual storm hits. And now, Hurricane Sandy, who the social media clumsily dubbed 'Frankenstorm' was headed our way. And look out, Sandy was big, bad and ominous. Tidewater, you better get ready for the worst! By Friday, our area was pretty much in a panic. Gas and bank lines long. Grocery store shelves empty. Generators sold.

By Saturday the heavy rain and the strong wind started. Everyone was prepared for the days of no electricity, possible water contamination, damage, the whole bit. But somehow after 2.5 straight days of pounding rain and wind, the lights didn't even flicker, the Internet access was never lost and the generators all sat silently. By Monday night we knew we were spared! We were spared! Oddly enough, some local people seemed disappointed. Even bored.

But as we woke up this morning, we see that NY, NY and CT were not spared. Devastation and destruction hit hard. The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy will be felt for a very long time. So, as I sit here and see the pictures, stories and videos of Hurricane Sandy and her angry wrath, I know one thing. I am grateful. Grateful for the preparations, grateful for the warnings, grateful for the time with family, grateful that we were spared. Grateful.
